Joris de Groot MD, PhD, FESC is a clinical electrophysiologist and professor of Cardiac Electrophysiology and Atrial Fibrillation at the Amsterdam University Medical Centers/University of Amsterdam.

He obtained is MD license in 1997 (with honors). After having be rewarded a PhD on a thesis on the mechanism of ischemia induced ventricular fibrillation in 2001, he was trained as a cardiologist and electrophysiologist.

His research interests include the mechanism of atrial fibrillation in conjunction to optimal patient selection for medical or ablation therapy, and to optimal prevention of symptoms and complications. He attracted several highly competitive personal grants, and his research group is robustly funded by industry partners.

Dr. de Groot is engaged in several large international multicentre studies on AF mechanism, device therapy and AF detection, and on stroke prevention with oral anticoagulation, with a particular interest in NOACs. He further serves as principal investigator for several industry sponsored and investigator initiated clinical studies.

Joris de Groot lives with his wife and their three daughters in Amsterdam.
